Hello everyone, this is Thom Stark, TheOrganicRetiree, @theorganicretiree.com blogging in Monday, October 10, 2016. For most of you, this is the beginning of the work week. For me, it is no different except for one major detail. I work at home. As I began my morning, I started reflecting on how different my life is than just a couple years ago. I quickly realized what a joy it is to work in a non-traditional way, in the comfort of my own home.
There are many advantages to Working from Home and I came up with my top fifteen reasons. They are organized into five categories: Freedom and Flexibility, Financial Benefits: Saving and Making Money, Better Use of Time, Things You’ll No Longer Have to Worry About, and Health, Well Being and Peace of Mind.
FREEDOM AND FLEXIBILITY
- I get up when I am done sleeping – I choose to work when I am at my best. Some days I am energized early and so I get up and get going. Some days it is the opposite. I used to be a night owl and sometimes that old bio-rhythm returns. But either way, I work when I am ready and am more focused and purposeful as a result.
- Always be there for important events in your life – Last week one of my brothers was in Michigan. It has become an annual family event that ties into the ArtPrize event in Grand Rapids. This year he was only available during the weekday. It was easy to accommodate his travel schedule (and still get work done). We had a great time.
- You can take power naps any time you please – Um, who else gets paid to take a nap, if you need one, during your “work” shift. A friend of mine works for a major, big box, home supply store. A co-worker (now former co-worker) was found napping in the area where the hot water heaters are shelved. He was on the floor but hidden behind the boxes of hot water heaters. Unfortunately, he also snored rather loudly and was discovered by the store manager. You can guess the outcome.
There are many serious reasons to work at home. There are also some whimsical ones. But there is truth in both. When you work at home, you finish more of what’s important to you and live a very different lifestyle. Learning becomes interesting again. Passion is revived. Different and, for me, a much better paced life. It is also one full of rewards and surprises.
I recently found this response to a similar article about the benefits of working at home. Here the writer says: “This is my completely biased, unscientific opinion, but I would add that a longer, happier lifespan is more likely! Instead of thinking ahead to “retirement”, you’re working at something you love, producing value for clients and yourself with minimal stress and maximum freedom, and creating your ideal lifestyle. That’s bound to add a few very good years, right?”
